The bonus track 4 is quite different from the other pieces. It began as an experimental study in using a single sound source to create overlapping and intersecting melodies. I further developed it into a repetitive but developing meditation on a bell.

The first two pieces are my most recent works: Bamboo... was inspired by a few lines of writing from 'The Book of Tea' and just plays with the sensations of being in that place and in that moment. Debris of a Night is what remains after a night of unfulfilled longing; an empty place save for the emotional debris symbolised by the crumbling walls. And yes the broken stairs were a consistent theme. Metro to Paradise is included since the Turin metro, which provided the only sound sample, is a place in itself; a much smaller and more intimate experience compared with the London Underground of my childhood. Diabolus in Musica is explained in the notes and for me feels like a place that has no clear boundaries, just a space to exist in the moment of seven and a half minutes of absence of movement.

Francesca is an experimental composer and sound artist. She studied musiques concrète at the University of East Anglia in the late seventies with Denis Smalley.  Then the music was created with recorded sounds manipulated on magnetic tape and sometimes patched through an analog synth.
